In Johnson City, Kingsport, Bristol, and throughout Northeast Tennessee & SW Virginia, bed bugs aren’t a “dirty home” problem—they’re hitchhikers. They most often get inside through travel, visitors, used furniture, and multi-unit housing, then hide in tight cracks near where people sleep and spread fast if the source isn’t treated correctly.

• Common Bed Bugs: The #1 culprit in local homes, apartments, and hotels. They hide in mattress seams, bed frames, headboards, baseboards, and furniture joints—often staying out of sight until bites or staining show up.

• Tropical Bed Bugs: Less common in our area but can be introduced through travel. Identification matters because treatment planning depends on what you’re dealing with.

• Look-Alikes: Sometimes “bed bugs” turn out to be bat bugs, which require a different approach (including addressing the bat source). That’s why inspection and proper ID come first.

• Signs you may have bed bugs: Rust-colored stains on bedding, dark spotting (fecal marks), shed skins, eggs/eggshells, or live bugs around beds and nearby furniture. EP
